E36 + E46 Lollipop Bush Change. E46 control arm bush DIY

Today I changed the lollipops on my E46 330, but I know the E36 uses the same type of system, so the principals are the same.
I had the bushes in my possession, the missus wanted to watch that England V Italy game and I couldn't give a flying toss about football, so I did the bushes instead

    Tools Needed:
16mm socket and ratchet. A short extension is ideal. White/Clear grease (Anything not silicone based). The 16mm socket is used for the metal undertray and the lollipops themselves.
Not sure on the tools required for the plastic undertray, as mine had kindly been removed and lazily not been put back
Fags and beer are also essential

I used (as I always do) 2 railway sleepers to raise the car that little bit higher, then jack up the car with the BMW jack provided. I also used a hydraulic bottle jack underneath too just incase. I also put the car in gear and used the handbrake. And I must say, that the design of the E46 jack is much better than the E36 jack, BMW did good here

Heres the lollipops before the change, and undertray in place:

Remove the undertrays, with the metal one needing the 16mm socket:

Then remove the 2x16mm bolts holding the lollipop on, I started with the drivers side:

Old lollipop out, new one in:

Both the lollipops were removed without a puller - They were done by brute force and ignorance !
It is possible. Or maybe I got lucky

    New lollipop in:

    Both lollipops in:

    Metal undertray back in:

Job done in less than 2 hours. I probably could've done it abit quicker had i've not stopped for so many fag and beer breaks

    Ferret !

I've gotta disagree, as everytime I jacked up the E36 with the BMW jack, I always wondered what that crunching noise was.... Until the car falls down and I realise it was the jacking point

The 46 jacking point seems alot sturdier. But thats just my opinion

    Well I gotta disagree again!
Once the rubber pads fall off on the E46 there isn't much to stop the jack slipping!
I say bring back ladder chassis and live axles, much easier to jack!

My E46 fell off the standard jack, my E36 hasn't. Yet. There's plenty of time for that though.

TBH, all I use widowmakers for now is to get the car high enough to get the trolley jack under it.

Handy guide though, I especially like the beer and smokes aspect - Haynes manuals never include that bit so I tend to write it in with a pen. Along with 'Refitting is the reverse of removal - but with more swearing and regretting starting the f*cking job.'
