This is a general guide on how to change your BMW E36 amber rear lights to clear if they don't work properly when you change them, and not butchering the clusters by cutting pins.
This was done on my Coupe but it will be similar for other models.
8mm socket and ratchet
A length of cable rated at enough to carry the load of the circuit
Soldering iron and solder
1. Remove the rear cover off the lights put somewhere safe
2. Unplug the connector block
3. You will now see x4 8mm fixings remove these put in a safe place
4. Disconnect battery and plug in soldering iron.
If you look on the nearside(N/S) you will see a layout like this.
The offside layout is like this
Take the cable and thread it through a suitable place, strip back the insulation on the N/S Red/blue cable (don't cut it) and solder the new cable on to the conductors, do the same with the driver's side but use the top Blue/red cable. Then tape up the soldered joints.
Reconnect the battery and test to make sure ALL lights work before driving vehicle.
Sorry there are no photos of step by step, I really forgot about doing it.
The reason I soldered it is if ever I sell the car chances are I will put the ambers back on, so therefore just have to remove the soldered cable, no fuss, so nasty joins.
