Having recently purchased a high mileage (180k) 120d sport for the wife, I'm more than a little disappointed in the mpg its returning at the moment..............around 36mpg if the computer is accurate.
What do others get on similar models?
I've run diesels for years and never had an mpg problem so I'm a little stuck for what to look at if this mpg turns out to be lower than others get. If it can't be improved wifey is going to be upset to say the least - her Golf always returned over 50mpg and over 45mpg with my right foot in control.
Ok so its 163bhp against the Golf's 105bhp but driven reasonably I'd expect at least 40mpg. I had a new 150hp 320d in 2004 and that always returned over 45mpg - regularly north of 50mpg on a run. Plenty of people seem to achieve over 40bhp out of old M51 6 cylinder diesel engined cars so I'd expect more out of this.
There could be wear in the pump or injectors at this mileage but it had no problems passing its MOT and doesn't smell or smoke unduly. I'm thinking EGR valve/inlet manifold gummed up? Anyone done one? First port of call though is going to be the air filter - I haven't looked but I've read that they are not easy to do. Seeing how the rest of the car's maintenance (lack of) has been carried out, if its true they are bad to do, I wouldn't be surprised to see a very black, sooty filter.
