I have a 118d Cabrio 2012 (2011 manufactured) it is 1995cc and 105/4000 Diesel and I love it.
I have ran this car for 2 years without a single problem. But recently (last 3 months) the car started stalling on me. At traffic lights, roundabouts and even on the highway. Cuts out … no power no steering, no brakes. Very scary.
The problem started in Spain. FYI.
The on board computer says it is an engine fault (nothing specific) and to go straight to a garage. This fault only shows when the problem has happened. There are no faults showing in the on board computer later. After a few seconds of starting up … it works again. Sometimes for a few miles, sometimes for a few days.
While in Spain I visited the nearest garage as slow as I could. Not BMW dealership, but competent enough and he tells me it 'could' be the fuel filter. So he changes it and yes, it works again. It runs exactly as before. A great little car again.
3000Km later it happens again. Not in a tunnel or around a blind bend thank God, but still, I am getting very nervous. I live in the mountains … and well … as you can appreciate that 'may' be a problem.
I took it to the BMW dealer in Spain (after the other guys fixed it) and they could not see a fault showing. They even connected their computer while I drove around and nothing. A mystery. It started and drove well whilst with them of course.
