    Advice before purchase

Hi, I'm looking at buying my Wife a 118 E87 Diesel and am looking for some guidance on this. Is this a good idea? car has done 127k and has a full history, some BMW and some local garage.
I would value your opinions/advice in what to be careful of before buying. Thanks Paneuro

    Is this the M47 (pre-2007) or N47 (2007-2014) engine?

    Correct it’s the M47.
The 118d of this era is known to have a weak diff. Change the diff oil every 30k max.
Have the engine oil changed every 10k miles.

Check the DMF, clutch and water pump have been replaced around 100k. These are costly items.

At some point the suspension should have been refreshed. If not then you may need to put money aside for shock absorbers, bushes, control arms, etc. Corroded brake hoses are common. If they corrode the brake pipes will also need replacing.
Flashing triangle and limp mode can mean corroded reluctor rings. Cheap fix. After test walk around car and put your hands near the brake discs. If any are extremely hot it could be down to a caliper on its way out.

Do not change oils as per those stupid long service intervals recommended by BMW.
Listen for whining noises. This could be the turbo on its way out.

Check the MOT history and make sure there are receipts for work done on advisories.
In fact check the receipts to see what work has been done on the car too.
These things will give you an idea if it’s treated well or not.

Check OBC in dash to see what services are due and when.

Think I might just leave it and stick to a VW. Thanks for the information. Paneuro
