BMW E87 118D 2005 white smoke on start up and diesel smell in car

    Hi folks,
I need some help please .For a while now my sisters car has been throwing out lots of white smoke on cold start upas well as running lumpy and also you can smell diesel in the car at the same time. To cut a long story short, had the car looked at by a mechanic who suggested that there was a problem with cylinder 2 and that it appeared to be a leaking/faulty injector. Advice was to remove and replace injector and if no improvement do a compression test on cylinder 2.
Have at last managed to remove the injector which seemed to be surrounded by lots of black crud, but I cant seem to see or find an injector seal there. Is it possible for these to just break up?I managed to suck up a lot of the crud in the injector port with a small pipe attached to a vacuum.I have attached pics of the inside of the port and of the old and replacement injectors.
I believe there are 2 seals on the injectors ...a rubber one on the main body as seen on the replacement injector and a copper on on the nozzle.
My concern is how can i be sure the old seal is not in the port and how to best chck this and also how to clean the port. Could the old seal have fallen into the hole at the base of the port where the injector nozzle sits ?

Obviously can't be 100% but I very very much doubt the copper crush gasket will have broken up into small enough pieces to have fell into the cylinder without a single trace?
More likely it's a refurb injector fitted by or under previous owner.

As you can see from the images below once the injector is fitted the small lugs on the copper washer should grip the injector nozzle keeping it in place.
