    MPG Help!!!

    Hi Guys,

I have a 2006 BMW 120D that i have had for approx 4 weeks. I noticed that the car didnt seem as good on fuel as I expected and when I looked at the trip computer it said i was getting 36.2mpg, which i thought was quite low. I reset the trip computer and drove to work and back (approx 80 miles, of which about 65 are motorway miles) i then looked at the trip computer and I was getting around 49mpg, which looked better.

I hve now done around 300 miles since i reset my trip comp, of which around 200-250 are motorway miles and i have tried to drive as economical as possible (believe me i mean economical) and now the mpg has already dropped down to around 38mpg. Can anyone please explain this? This is nowhere near what BMW claim and is baffling me!

I am also having another problem with the car and i am unsure if it is related. Upon start up of the car, i persume when the engine is cold, for the first 10 miles ish the car judders in first gear, as if it is about to stall/cut out. Can anyone help me with this?

    Thanks

    Stephen

I would take BMW figures with a pinch of salt...they carry out their tests on a rolling road inside a controlled environment. Missus has the same model and those figures are not far off as an average combined town/motorway. If you want to improve it a little, then I suggest using Millers Ecomax additive. Also, EGR stat not opening at 88C will cause the odd mpg loss. DIY section shows how to get into the hidden computer to check. As for judder, could be down to cold/damp clutch if it goes away after your 10 miles or so.

Hi Thanks for that. It's not just the trip computer, the car just doesnt seem that good on fuel. Someone on another forum has the exact same car and they say they are averaging between 47 and 50 mpg and i'm just confused as to why i am not getting anywhere near that? Thanks

Give the car a good clean with Millers and see if that improves it...I use it and it does make a difference. Otherwise, switch to Shell V Power for the first few tanks. And tbh, 47-50mpg combined is a big ask, because I've never seen that on this model and yr.

Also BMW are notorious for skewed MPG figures, by using a base model (IE no added weight of options).

Take it for a good blast to clean out the EGR etc, I use my Bora TDI for 100miles a day, 98% motorway, doing 65mph to work, and it was getting sluggish, so I took it for a right hoot to get the build up of crap out (TDI's of my cars era had variable vane turbo's, which are known to get carbon build up in the vanes, causing them to get stuck, maybe similar in yours?).

Feels brand new now, with amazing MPG again (back to 65mph ) lol

My old 1 series used to judder first tihng in the morning in damp condition, i did a lot of reserch and it was the clutch and flywheel at fault. Apparently its a known defect and will result in the clutch and flywheel beeing replaced. Yours might be a different issue tho.
