Was hoping not to have to post anything like this after just over 2 months of ownership but think I'm already facing my first major issue.
Driving home from work yesterday, accelerating uphill the car juddered quite violently a couple of times then lost all power. Turned the stereo off & could hear what I can only describe as a "whining" sound coming from up front that fitted in with the turbo spooling. First place I stopped, no bloody mobile signal so limped about another 4 miles & called the AA.
AA guy checked all the hoses for splits & also anything that'd come off but all seemed fine. With my head under the bonnet I could hear the whine coming straight from the turbo when he gave it some revs. There's no smoke from the exhaust. Car's done 112k by the way & there's nothing in the previous history to suggest that the turbo has ever been replaced.
So, going to take the hoses off at the weekend to check the turbine & impeller for any play & suspect I'll find the problem as a result.
Couple of questions though if I may (presuming I find that the turbo has failed),
1. It's gonna have to be a re-con turbo, been trawling Google already & most seem to be the £300 - £400 mark. Is that about right & can anyone make any recommendations of anyone they've bought a recon unit from before?
2. There's currently no smoke from the exhaust & if I find that the turbo is broken but free from oil, do I still need to worry about having the manifold, intercooler & exhaust cleaned?
3. Any tips, general advice or similar experience most appreciated. Sing a song if you like, anything to stop me thinking "I've got to spend bloody money"!
