Just wanted to say hello to all users of this site.
We've not long owned our 3 series BMW 320d M Sport on a '53 plate, well, when I say 'ours', I really mean the wife's lol! I'm still driving my old 200K+ miles Toyota Avensis D4-D estate, shes a good ol bus, but hoping to change to a 5 series 330d touring next year since driving the BMW - even though the 3 series (E46 / 6 speed 150 BHP) has done 147K miles, drives & goes like a car that's done 30k!.
I'm an ex forces mech / elec engineer, so quite handy with both mechanical & electrical issues, though don't confess to being an expert with cars. We're also both keen bikers (wife has a Yamaha Fazer 600 & I have a Honda Superblackbird).
Had the car approx 6 weeks now, slight issue cropped up yesterday with it, hence the google search & discovered this site. I've also done a bit of research on this car, seems the main issues are;
1. Swirl flaps
2. Crankcase breather filter
3. Fuel filter under back seat (blocked strainer)
I've removed the swirl flaps & installed blanks bought from i6 automotive. They seem an excellent set up & know their BMW's inside out. Guessing you all know about them, but if anyone wants the contact details please let me know & I'll post them.
Issue with the car was under hard acceleration in 1st gear yesterday, once approx 3.5 to 4k rpm was reached, the car lost all power (suddenly), I then changed straight into 2nd gear, put foot on gas pedal & nothing! Engine didn't cut out & no dash warning lights came up, car continued to decelerate for approx 3 seconds in second gear, then power returned.
I cleaned out the EGR valve when I did the swirl flaps, it wasn't too bad, but was spotless when refitted. Don't think the EGR valve is stuck open, as car accelerates hard still, so plenty of boost pressure there.
I'm thinking the crankcase breather or fuel filter strainer? Others in my street with 3 series E46's have advised to change both.
Has this happened to anyone else before or is this a known fault etc?
BMW's are all new to me, any advice would be greatly received. I posted this in a general section & a few members have said to try the tech section, so 2nd time lucky!
