I just bought a 1997 316i M43B16 manual. I did replace the fuel filter, plugs, oil and oil filter and also cleaned my maf, throttle body and smoke vacuum leak test (I think I repaired all previous leaks). I did screw up with the MAF CO screw, but I think that just affects the idle. After twisting it w/o knowing a thing about it, the engine stopped havin that good condensation in the morning.
Also, I can't find my o2 sensor anywhere on my exhaust. There's no hole for it, but there's a plug hanging from the transmission. Its weird. I have no catalyst, which I think it's normal.
So if I don't have a o2 sensor, what's reading my air/fuel mixture? My idle is smooth I guess, and stable. I don't have any missfires along acceleration or even at high rpms. My temperature is nailed in the middle, no issues.
The only issue right now is this incredible high fuel consumption, the smell of gas, camshaft position sensor w/ some moist of oil, the idle is along 900's (can I adjust this w/ twisting my tps sensor?) and.. sometimes when I've accelerated hard, it felt like the clutch slip.
Lately, I've replaced my cluster w/ a 6cyl cluster, giving me a lower rpm reading, but I have no ideas if the fuel consumption gauge is right or wrong. When I shift in 2nd gear, my needle will go around 5-6kms/l on 1.5k rpm, and 3rd gear around 8kms/l at around the same rpm range. I cannot tell if my fuel senders are that accurate, becuase it moves all the time. Upon filling the gas, it raises, then after 100 meters it drops like I've consumed 1L already. When park, turn off the engine and after a while, turning it on again, the needle will raise and then.. drops again. This is the lower fuel sender, because I'm almost at empty tank. I really can't say whether or not my tank is out of gas, I can't trust my gauge. I'll try to clean the fuel senders and check if they could give me more accurate and consistent readings.
This is my daily car, and going from point A to point B, which is approx. 12kms, I consume 1.78L of 95oct fuel (city driving). It's like 15-16L/100kms. I barely hit the 4th gear, and I don't get pass 2.5k rpm when shifting (assuming). There is no smoke coming out from the exhaust but you can smell gas from distance. Lookin at my plugs:
