My 91 E36 (auto) has a stange problem. The car starts and drives fine, but yesterday when I was going up a steep hill, the transmission light came on, and a whineing noise started, this combined with what felt like the engine going into limp home mode. Today I drove the car to work as normal with no problems, then when I was coming home it did it again as I pulled into the driveway.
I had a good look around the car, and I can be sure that the whine is definitely coming from the gearbox or bell housing area. It's not loud, but it is noticeable. Turning the car off always seems to stop it.
Based on what I've read so far, I am thinking along the lines of a fluid issue (or lack of) ? I've never experienced this before, has anyone else?
I realy need this sorted, It's my only car and I need it for work. I am going outside now to have a good look under it, and pull out the workshop manual to see if it has any useful info.
Any help would be appreciated.
