Hi everyone! I'm new here so hope this is in the correct section and makes sense!
I have an S reg E46 318. Its extremely old but previously really well looked after. Body work is great, low mileage for age and in my seven months has been extremely reliable. I had the oil changed and filters in spring i'd say. Possibly done 7k since.
last night while driving home it started to stink. I don't want to say of burning but just not right and a little burny. The oil is low and i'm not sure the correct amount of antifreeze is in there. There is no water in the oil and no foamy type stuff around the oil filler cap.
It is smoking but it's grey smoke so I believe that is not burning oil or water and is due simply to the heat ( or lack)
Am I ok to just top up? Apart from the smell, I wouldn't worry. I'd say oil is on minimum/just above (checked when cold, before start up). How much oil should I buy? or should I just get an oil change and filters again? I can get a guy to do that for £40 tomorrow but would need to buy oil to drive home from work anyway so i'm thinking just top up depending on how much oil I have to buy and if its cost affective against a service...
I have been told 5w-30 fully synthetic.
I'm not good with cars and all the stuff I have mentioned is just stuff I've picked up over the years so may not even be correct.
Thank you for any advice. I need this car to not break on me :-)
