I've known that one of my glow plugs has been registering a fault since I bought this car some 18 months ago (I'm probably answering my own question here lol) but I'm getting conflicting opinions on it.
Last winter was pretty mild so I never had any bother then but this year there's been many mornings when the temperature has been well into the minus figures. On these mornings, when I start the car it sounds like it's initially firing on only 3 cylinders & I get a puff of grey smoke along with a slight exhaust smell in the cabin. Give it just a couple of seconds & then everything's fine. This is only on very cold mornings mind, any other outside weather conditions & it's no problem & the car starts fine with minimal smoke (if any).
In the one hand I have my Father-In-Law categorically trying to tell me that glow plugs in modern common rail diesels don't really do squat unless we're talking seriously artic weather & in the other I have my logic which suggests the above symptoms do point to the faulty glow plug being the issue.
What does everyone else think?
