Hello all, recently picked up a 96 318i convertible for the summer. Sorting thru a few issues, one being a slight leak from the base of the coolant expansion tank. I read the o ring at the bottom gets old and worn, went shopping on Amazon and bought a new expansion tank. Got the old one out and installed new one and getting leak in same exact place which is on the back (engine side) not the front of the car side. Replacement tank is a Behr not chinese.
1. When you insert the new tank are you supposed to hear some kind of click as it locks/snaps into place?
I put a pretty decent amount of force pushing down and appeared to be all the way in. Did not leak but then when i started car and ran for a minute, it started leaking in the same spot as the old tank.
2. is it possible that the base the expansion tank sits in be the issue sine both the old and new tanks are leaking from the sane spot?
If yes, I assume that means the radiator needs replacing?
3. On the 1.9 motor is there supposed to be a clip that goes at the bottom of the expansion tank? if yes, if i am missing that could that be my issue causing the leak? i have seen something like that on a few diagrams found on a Google search but not a ton of info out there for the 1.9 motor.
thanks in advance for your help.
