Since early this year I have started noticing a loud clunking sound coming from the right side (drivers side) rear suspension. It sounds to me like a metal on metal clunk, although garage have chipped in with it sounding like a metal on dry rubber sound.
The car itself drives fine, and the only time the clunk happens is when the suspension is under compression, i.e. going above 50 and hitting a large bump/dip in the road and it is defiantly isolated to the right side. The right rear side also sits around 10mm lower than the left side, which is another indication something is broken. The clunk sound itself is quite loud and both myself and the garage said it sounded like it was coming from inside the car, (Although the boot lining has been ripped out and nothing looks loose/broken).
Also to add to everything I had 4 people in the car a few weeks ago and the car was almost undrivable. Every tiny bump in the road, even when going 30MPH was clunking, and if I turned left, so the weight shifted to the right of the car there was a loud grinding sound from the right rear. Very unsettling!!
In my process to fix this I have had it diagnosed by a BMW specialist and they first suggested shocks and springs, which we replaced both. I've put H&R 30mm lowered springs in (The car was already lowered by 30mm so no change in spring height) and some OEM shocks. After this the car still clunked. Next step was top mounts, which again we replaced and it's still clunking.
Now I'm at the point where I've chucked a lot of money at this problem under the garage's advice, and it's still just as bad as at the beginning!!
I'm hoping you guys can suggest some ideas as to what could be wrong, suspension, chassis?? before I dip further into my pocket and pay for more inspections and diagnostics to isolate the issue.
Also if you have any recommendations of good garages or specialists in the Kent / London area that'd be much appreciated.
