2004 e46 ti 316 with all sorts of issues, central locking, radio reception etc.

The central locking started to play up on the car ages ago. the locking would start to only work the closer I got to the car, then it was intermittent. then it stopped all together. The next thing was the car would no longer start with the key. Luckily I had a second key that had no unlock button on it though. But the car started fine with this. Any ideas?

The radio also has very poor reception. I did try another booster box that sits in the boot its self, but the reception has stayed the same. Is there a fix? is there an external aerial (retro fit) Ariel that works better?

    The window regulator has snapped

I keep getting a fault on the dash. I checked with inpa and it comes up with a fault that will not clear vvt? the light goes out when its cleared, but comes back on a bit later. The fault will not clear in inpa though.

What's the cars battery condition like, once they start going you can get a whole load of unasociated faults & errors?

as far as i am aware it is fine. I will check it later. I know its charging at 14.3 volts. But that's all I know for know. Can I check this in inpa or just use the volt meter across the battery to see what it drops to when starting?

To me this could easily Be unconnected individual faults allowed to accumulate over time

For example the EWS chip in the key that no longer works is not connected in any way to the working or not of the built in alarm key fob

Would a knackered battery in the key fob cause this? Can it be fixed. My thinking is the key fob battery failing meaning the remote signal being weaker and weaker. Then when the battery dies the code is lost in the key?

Strange list of faults (faults that are seemingly unconnected), but I'm kinda swaying on the side of Simon, and the battery maybe being at fault - The charging voltage means shit! Load testing it with a proper load tester at a garage would be 10x better!

The wiring between the body and boot lid can also give false positives when trying to diagnose problems if it's going bad.

Can we have screenshots of EVERY module from INPA when this problem is occurring. We need screenshots, rather than hearsay such as "I checked with inpa and it comes up with a fault that will not clear vvt?" as that's no use whatsoever! I need to see the fault, fault code and conditions surrounding it!

    Chris.

Ok. I will get screen shots tomorrow.

On the other note. Would a dead battery in the fob lose the transponder code? The key turns the car but will not fire up. The remote locking from the key will not work at all now.

The transponder doesn't require power any power from the battery, the battery does is for the buttons, e.g. lock / unlock. If the car does not start with that key but does with another every time, then it will be the transponder in the key. If it struggles with any key then it is possible it could be the ignition switch.

    Final thought
    EWS disables starter and DME
If the engine turns over but doesn't start it's not ankey transponder issue
