    Few issues needing sorting

On my 2002 318 se when I star the car there is a droning sound when I start the car up coming from behind the radio and also when I turn the engine off don't know what it is wonder if it could be a fan. Initially I thought it was cos I have an after market radio fitted and it might be something to do with that. Not sure if this has something to do with it but my heater only blows hot air even on cold setting.

My gear stick is a bit loose I have some play in it when in gear left to right still gets the gears ok but little annoying thinking of fitting a short shifter hoping that might help it or could it be the bushings

A lot of my interior trim is badly scratched and was thinking of sorting it but what would be best to either carbon wrap them or sand them down and paint them or plasti spray them

Does the noise stop if the fan is switched off?

Sounds like the bushes, quite a fiddly job TBH.

Wrapping them means that you can change the appearance in the future if you want to, carbon wrap looks pretty cool IMO.

Some aftermarket headunits do have fans fitted to them, but I wouldn't expect it to be that noisy. The climate control unit also has a fan in it, this does get noisy because of it's age. See if you can pinpoint it to this.

Sounds like a failed heater valve. They're designed to fail in the "always hot" position.

Managed to sort the heating issue out but still have a noise on start up and turn off like a winding groaning type squeal so hard to explain

It's not your air pump kicking in is it? Does it go off after a couple of minutes?

As soon as I start the car up it comes on and lasts maybe 3-4 seconds like a tape getting jammed

Could well be the fan in the heater panel, put your ear to the heater panel and see if the noise is from there.

Have a look to see if your drive belts are worn. Shine a torch down there.

My belt was worn and I had it replaced and rollers cleaned. Noise vanished afterwards

I didn't do it myself so can't really say. If you ok at DIY you should be able to do it. I believe you need to take the engine cover, pollen filter, airbox and radiator out to access the belts.

The engine cover, filter and airbox is easy. That I have done. Not sure about the radiator.
