Haha - yes! Whenever I get a whiff of that sort of smell I always think E46 now

A can of that air con sanitizer stuff helped mine slightly but never eradicated it. Funnily enough the strongest of the smell always coincided with the windscreen completely fogging over for no reason in true E46 style too

I believe it's standing water. Using any air conditioning unit will generate condenstation. The condensation builds up as standing water somewhere in your system. The standing water will begin to smell after a while especially in warmer weather and if debris (like leaves etc.) have got in there.

You can try those air con bombs to kill the mould/bacteria but you're probably best to build up a habit of switching the air conditioning off towards the end of your journey BUT leaving your "blower" on for 2-3 mins. The blower will dry up the condensation and dry up the standing water. No water, no smell.

Thanks guys whats a air con bomb? Ive never heard of these before...so your saying its a build up of water in the system? Would putting the system on hot dry it up? Or is that a different air passage?

    Something like this
AIR CON BOMB - AIR CONDITIONING CLEANER 200ml ONE SHOT (SGAC2) | eBay

You close all your windows, turn on your AC and discharge the can. It shoots out a non staining fog that gets in all the nooks and crannies of your interior and the AC system. There a loads about, some with a slight lemon smell and some odourless etc. Its main purupose is to kill bacteria.

Yes, exactly- hot air blower (on non AC mode) will dry up the built up water. I always do this (or cold air) after I've used my air con.

Oh, don't sit in the car when the can is discharging! That would be a bit dangerous.

Leave it for 10-15 mins with windows and doors closed. Can should empty after about 5-7mins. After 10-15 mins, open your windows and leave your AC to continue to run. Don't sit back in your car until you are confident all the "fog" has fully cleared.

Also, don't leave your car unattended with your engine running unless you're giving your car away to an opportunist for free.

I'd also recommend you change the pollen filter yourself. It is very easy to do and you can pick the filters up anywhere from 10 to 25. Don't forget BIMFOR25
