    2001 320d 136hp touring - metal in engine oil

Hi, I've been sent over here from another forum as you all have superior knowledge
I noticed small parts of metal on my dipstick when checking the oil. Today I have done an oil change to be safe, however I have found a reasonable amount of metal in the filter and engine oil. I had to change the turbo on my car just over 1 year ago, the engine was flushed after the change, and I've had no signs of metal shards until very recently.
Do you have any ideas on what it could be, or if it is going to be terminal? Sorry about the picture quality!

How did the turbo fail? Did it "explode"?? - If so it's PROBABLY part of the turbo when it expired..... That's why most turbo replacement companies will only warranty a replacement unit if the sump is removed and the oil pump pick up strainer cleaned out.... Difficult to say without removing the covers though.....

I would have the sump off sharpish if it where me and inspect the pickup and the end caps ASAP if it where mine.... When a turbo fails with a big bang there is a ton of shit that hits the sump.... Flushing does not guarantee complete removal of the containments only removal and cleaning it out does.....

That was a fast response! I don't have any oil lights on, the performance is erratic, on and off boost throughout the rev range, at higher rpm 3.5k+ the car smokes (black colour). The turbo shaft snapped, a few parts of the blade ended up in the inter cooler as well as oil.

Erratic performance could be the boost pressure solenoid, EGR vavle or many other things - black smoke sounds like overfueling, have you tried disconnecting the MAF and running the car then to see if it still smokes the same? If parts of the blade ended up in the intercooler then they ended up all over the place including the sump.... BUT I would want to check myself....

To me what s interesting is you have Brass/Bronze coloured material as well as Aluminium shards!

What does the Turbo have for bearing material?

Where on the engine is that material used?

    Alu is normally housing!

    Brass/bronze - turbo bearings
Aluminium - Input side of the turbo.....

BUT IT COULD BE A MILLION OTHER PLACES TOO....................

I've disconnected the MAF, the car runs a lot worse, I've also disconnected the MAP, and the car also runs worse. EGR has been disconnected. My worry now is, what damage has been done with all that running in the engine for 1 year.
