e46 coupe creaking noise, common causes?

right, i realise this is probably impossible to diagnose on a forum, but hope i could get pointed in the right direction.....

basically i have this creak noise, best way i can describe is like an old boat creaking. i only notice it at slow speeds (not to say it doesnt happen when going faster, but i can't hear it). problem is i can't tell where its coming from, but if it sounds like anywhere, i would say from the front. its not a noise that seems to happen when going over bumps, its more evident when slowing, or slight turns, but not consistant if that makes sense. it doesnt sound metallic, and i struggle to hear it with window open. i have bounced the car on all corners, and cant hear it, so going to get the front end in the air tomorrow and see what i can see.

steering seems tight enough, apart from the occasional vauge feel every now and again when on the motorway
any ideas, or a hint of where and what to look for?
    thanks in advance

Sometimes the world is still flat, especially if you can't see as far as the horizon

Try getting a friend to help bounce the front with you and see if it does it, could be from a dry ball joint, had it before.

think i have found the problem....

jack up drivers side front, hold wheel at 3 and 9 oclock, not much movement.
jack up passenger side front, hold wheel at 3 and 9 oclock, and plenty of movement, from what i can see (will confirm later on when someone is with me) is movement towards the rear of the car from the front wishbone, which i would assume is this part

i cant say 100% its that yet as i cant see the actual bush, just plenty of movement from the arm by that bit which i can see through the wheel arch, how solid are these parts supposed to be?

A lot more solid than that! A very, very common issue, opt for MeyleHD or Lemforder replacements, cheap bushes will last 12months max
