e46 steering wheel and airbag componants, am i missing anything? airbag not sitting

righto, i have a round airbag steering wheel, airbag will not push in fully. it sits out about 1cm at the top (enough that i can see the metal casing of the airbag behind and wiring). it nearly sits as it should at the bottom, but only because the airbag feels loose at the bottom, therefore it also flaps about as if there should be something behind the bottom of the airbag pushing it out and flush.
can someone tell me exactly what should make up the steering wheel and airbag system to see if i am missing anything.

    i have:-

    steering wheel (obviously lol)
backing plate, held in by 3 screws, and what feels like 3 springs on each screw to give the horn the push in and release function.
    airbag

thats it, don't think i have anything else there, is there supposed to be something that pushs the bottom the airbag out towards the driver at the bottom?
airbag feels like it locks into place as it should behind the locking pins, but it just wont sit right.....
it has been suggested that the bracket with the 3 screws might be bent, i couldnt see any obvious signs of this, but will most likely change it anyway to be sure, but want to know if i am missing anything else first
    thanks in advance

Is it the original wheel and airbag? When I put an M3 wheel on my old E46 I had the opposite problem in that the airbag was slightly too small for the hole. steering wheel was from a late M3 and the airbag was from an early one IIRC.

looking at that guide picture, when i push the screwdrivers done each side and pull the airbag out, this is exactly what i am left with.

i have been told there should be a spring on the bottom bolt of that metal bracket that you can see when the airbag is pulled out, but i have nothing, could that be the issue?

    Should just push back in!

Check your springs are located correctly and that the locating mechanism on the airbag is correct and not being fouled.

The "TIS" Link explains in the Notes at the start about the grounding spring on the bottom torx screw that is no longer required to be fitted.
