e46 knocking/clunking noise from front, think i might have found, but is it????

had a clunking/knocking noise, most noticable at slow speeds over the last few weeks, seems more obvious when slowing to a stop, or slightl uneven roads, more obvious when going straight rather than cornering, had a look under car and lower control arm bushs (rear bush) were shot, and the whole arm was rattling around in the bush. changed them, and car feels much much tighter now, so pleased i done that, however the noise remains, having a closer inpection, i think the noise is coming from the column that comes from the steering wheel and down the side of the engine, is this whats known as the steering union joint? if i physically hold it, i can push it back and forward, and it makes a noticable clunk as i do this. how solid is this supposed to be?

looking at it there is a torx bolt top and bottom, so 'looks' easy enough to change, but is it that, or is it pointing to something else?
    thanks in advance

farely common steering knuckle wear wether its the fault tho is harder to diagnose..usually get sloppy loose/ steering aswell with worn knuckle joints when moving column static...

well i don't think its that then, steering feels solid, and drives and brakes a1.
so bloody annoying this noise, i'm not even convinced its from the front anymore, sometimes sounds like the front, sometimes in the middle and sometimes the rear lol. i can't even replicate the noise when i am parked up and bounce each corner, its quiet as a mouse when i do it.
noise happens when hiting bumps, slowing down or just pulling off. never seems to do it when cornering, like a creaking strained rubber/metal sound like a creaking ship, but no noise when i bounce the corners.
its been suggested that it may be the droplinks, but the fact i can't even tell where the noise is coming from makes it 10 times harder to find

what common things tend to go on these that would make this sort of noise? i've just replaced the rear control arm bush on each front, as they were shot, hoped it would be that, but no difference

I have the same problem at low speed over small bumps, low driveway curbs ect, I think Daily Doggy may have pointed you in the right direction with the steering column / knuckle joints. Ive heard that the two steering union bolts are something that can go and once replaced can improve this, havnt changed mine yet though.

found a dodgy wheel bearing on the rear so thats taken priority at the momont, never know it might sort it. but it does sound like its from the front to me, but my girlfriend is convinced its from the back lol. if it is that steering knuckle, would that still do it when going in a straight line? thats the only time i notice it, not when conering
