Friends E46 318 saloon 2003 - Warning lights but no fault codes!

As per title, a guy at work has had warning lights come on intermittently during long journeys over the last month or so. The first time was the cooling light so he had the sensor changed but it kept popping up again. Now today the engine warning light came on and started to misfire to the point where he had to turn around and go home. The AA guy come out, hooked up a fault finder but couldn't find no logged faults!

    Any ideas?

A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids it.

Did the AA man use a BMW specific scanner or just a EOBD item? Could be a coil issue, sensor issue or if the misfire won't now go then a chain timing issue.
