    Timing Chain Problem

    Hi All
New to forums and new to BMW.
I recently bought my first BMW - an 08 plate 318 se diesel touring (in June) and have started to get a rattle on cold start up. I sent it back to the (non BMW) dealer who has since told me that this is a timing chain problem? . Aparently BWM were aware of a fault on this model and developed a new modified sprocket that the chain runs around. This aprarently causes excessive ware. The problem is that it is out of warranty and not purchased through a BMW dealer. I am told that to replace the chain involves taking the whole engine out ........can anyone help / provide any pointers or advice? is anyone esle aware that BMW know about this problem with the timing chain?

yup its a common problem and your in for a shocking repair bill as the chain is at the rear of the engine cos bmw put it there cos they thought it is a fit and forget item...

if i were you if you have a fight in you ide start complaining of not fit for purpose and a known design fault and make a nuisance of yaself..

ya might get somewhere ya might not you should go see citizens advice and ask about the sale of goods and merchantable quality laws etc...

dealer is legally liable as he has sold you a car which had developed a knwn fault and its failed within 6 months of purchase they will try fob you off but legally they are liable to fix the fault or refund...go see the CAB is my advice...

not heard owt but at this stage that would be the least of my worries, you need to stick to the selling dealer or bmw themselves on merchantable goods and a known fault that they issue an upgraded part for......
