my new 330I Hasnt had a run for a couple of months

Started it up today took it round the block and there seemed to be a burning smell coming from the front wheel arches when the car was warmed up and on tickover.

It came and went, when i opened the bonnet it went completely obviously cause it aired more.

Anyone had this, could it be cause i sprayed back to black on the plastic parts and its burning off or could it just be cause it hasn't been run alot.

    cheers john

Hmm... maybe you've got a slight oil leak somewhere and the smell was this leaked oil burning? Sorry, no idea what else it could be.

Thanks mate. It does smell abit like something rubber not an oil burning smell.

I know this sound thick but i havn't owned one of these before, do they throw alot of heat out through the front arches?

Its not overheating on the gauge its dead centre or losing any water either.

Sounds like your brakes may have been binding hense the heat felt by the front arches?
It could just be with it being stood around, next time you take it for a spin touch all the alloys with the back of your hand and compare temperature.
If any wheel feels hotter get it in the air to check if the brake is indeed binding?

Best sure to post up how you get on John, hopefully it'll just be a few teething problems as it's been stood so long.

Jacked the car up the front wheels spin freely so its not that, Stuck it upon ramps took the bottom tray off not a sign of any leakage from anywhere i was surprised how clean and new looking it was under the obvious road dirt.

My thinking now is a very slight water leak cause it smells alot like burnt water, now it could be cause its been standing in damp conditions for a few months also i jet washed it heavily when i first got it last week.

It very slightly needed topping up but very minor toppage, and it doesnt overheat ive had it running for well over half an hour .

Its gotta be that i think. No cream sludge on the dipstick or expansion tank, just the usual slight on oil filler cap due to the very short journeys it used to do.

These engines are bullet proof so with 50,000 miles on it cant be anything major.

Needs a good run i think.

Sounds like it needs a good run.
When I top my oil up without a funnell usually spill a it which causes a smell - could be this if you have been a bit clumsy (or someone else has) when topping the oil
