    differential whine on over-run

    Hi again,
A long-term bugbear with my 318Ti (Automatic) is a differential whine on the over-run. It's been there for years and local BMW tech suggested some Moly treatment, which he did for me about 20,000 miles ago. But I'm sure it's getting louder than it was.
Do the diffs commonly whine, or maybe it's something else, any suggestions?
    Cheers
    Richard

its usually the diff or box if it whines on throttle off...

How many miles on the clock ? They do tend to whine, especially as the E36's are coming along in age.
You could try new diff oil, but if it was only done 20,000miles ago, then it's unlikely to fix it.

And like DD said, it's possible for it to be a bearing.

It's only done 95K miles, The whine came in about 75 to 80K , treated with some kind of Moly additive about that time.
    Cheers

change the diff if itsa problem it aint that bad a job and they can be had second hand for decent money, plenty about on fleabay just make sure you get the right ratio diff...

to me it sounds like you have worn planet gears in the diff...
