I have done the whole retro fit harman kardon, its a lot of work but in my eyes it was worth. If your gonna do it make sure you get everything ie all the speakers, main loom, amp, door looms and boot carpet. Also make sure your getting the harman kardon stuff as some e36 had a upgraded nokia setup

ok thanks for the help ive seen a set of kardons on ebay how can i be sure there kardons ? i dont want the guy to send them to me for me to find out they arnt he has the whole kit apart from the door loom and tweeters he reckons i can just use the current ones but i think it would effect it so i would have to source the door looms and tweeters i reckon.

and is the loom a plug in play yeah ? does the amplifier sit in between the 2 rear speakers ?

i have a sub connected atm are you running a sub with the kit ?

sorry for all the questions im just eager to know thanks

If you're not crazy about sound then an HK retrofit is not bad & plus you're keeping your car original. You'd need 2 rears, 2 tweeters, 4 speakers (2 in door card & 2 in kick panel), the wiring loom for the speakers to the amp, then the amplifier itself. Not forgetting the oem hifi switch also. It's a lot of work yes.

Otherwise you can also upgrade to aftermarket speakers & tweeters from good brands. Ensure these are the correct sizes:
    - KickPanel speakers : 5.25 (13cm)
    - DOOR CARD: Tweeters : 1 inch
    - DOOR CARD: Mid-range: 3 inches

    - Rears 4inch (stock) ---- If you want to run a pair of 6x9 speakers (better), then make sure you get adapters for them also.

    - Rear alternatively, you can also run 5.25 (13 cm speakers) on the rear shelf if you also buy the adapters. (which i've got for sale for a few quid anyway)

6x9's: Infinity, & JBL are good brands, some of us have them on, (there's other good brands also). for 6x9, you definitely need an adapter. (Cheap enough on fleebay)
Tweeters: JBL, Boss, Polk, Alpine, Pioneer, Infinity (Harman), MB Quart
Front speakers: (Same brands as above) , also adding Sony, Kenwood to the list.
