    Suspected DISA issue

I think I may be looking at a new DISA valve for the 330, as I'm hearing the tell tale slight 'rattle' at idle from that area of the intake, plus the low rev throttle response isn't what I think it should be (despite doing the 10 second 'ignition on/off' reset procedure before the last time I drove it). Plus, when changing from 2nd to 3rd under full throttle acceleration (in either Sport or Manual mode), there's a slight flat spot as 3rd engages before the revs pick up again.

I'm going to remove it (this evening if I get time), and have a look at it for play in the valve and if the pins are loose. I'm fairly confident I'm going to find out it's this and have already budgeted for getting a new one (where I hope Harry Fairbairn on here will be able to sort me out).

Seems to be quite a common thing to have to replace by all accounts?

Its worth having a look SOONER than TOO LATE! Most of the time the shaft breaks and all the bits stay put!! But if you are unlucky then bits can wind there way into the engine, pretty rare! But when mine went (a 2003 330i with 90000ish miles) I did not find ALL the bits but nothing seemed to have been damaged

Here is a pick of my old one, its snapped at the output shaft (probably designed to do so as a weak link if wear or forces overwhelm it) and you can see wear on the corner of the flap.

    Cheers for that Bratty

Fortunately I don't need to drive it everyday or anything, so it can stay put until I've got a new one bought and fitted.

From listening to various YouTube clips of others' rattling, mine isn't as loud, so I'm expecting to just find a little play in the actual flap due to the common 'rounding off' of the yellow plastic 'pin' thing that slots into it.........but I'll not know for sure until I get the thing off. Slightly annoyed though as I've just fitted a new strut brace and will have to take that off for access (well, at least that side). Gotta be done though, and as you say, not worth risking one anything breaking off and getting sucked down into the engine - 'cos I'm just that unlucky lol!

usually if ya unplug em they stop rattling or it goes quieter cos they are spring loaded IIRC...its not a fool proof diagnostic but it can confirm a duffer instantly tho...

I would love to pull one of these apart and see if I can pin it from other side

Well, I've just got it out and as I suspected there is a 'loose' play of about 8mm ish which will have been causing the rattle. Was otherwise intact as regards the securing pins thankfully.

Righto, off to have a word with Harry and see what he can do for me about a new one
