200k is a lot on some lesser cars, but if it's been well looked after (big wad of paperwork, stamped service book etc) then don't let it put you off.
Bimmer 6 pots are capable of some big mileages; I recently sold my 1995(N) 325 TDS with just shy of 240,000 on the clock and it still ran ok, sailed through the MOT smoke test etc.
Just keep in mind that if the money has not been spent by previous owners (ie; corners have been cut on essential maintenance) then you will be in line for some pretty hefty bills at some point down the line.

E36 TDS has given you some sound advice. The same comments he has given you applies to any BMW petrol or diesel. BMW's are well engineered motors and will last if looked after.

Whether it was worth viewing would also depend on:

    1) The price.
    2) What the condition of the car is in. (Ask to see some decent pictures as although they don't show everything they will give you a better idea).
    3) As E36 TDS comments I would only consider purchasing if it had an excellent service history.

In my experience though I'd spend more money on a newer car with a few less miles as in the long run it will probably work out cheaper.

    Cheers

i would budget for a tranny overhaul with that mileage, unless there is tranny work paperwork evidence with the car...

    BMW 330 Sport Auto Advice

I agree with DD here. If it were a manual I'd say as long as it drives well you're fine with that mileage. Being an auto though it's going to be harder to judge the condition of the drivetrain.

With those miles on if the gearbox fails you could well be looking at almost as much as the car's worth to repair it.

Do you specifically need an automatic? That engine's notoriously thirsty when coupled to the auto box (don't expect far north of 20mpg) but quite frugal with a manual (30+ average is easy)

It would have to be seriously cheap to go out and buy a car with that mileage on it - so many things MAY need attention not least the gearbox, the e46 model is getting older now and even the newest ones are quite cheap. You may find it more cost effective to buy a lower mileage example to start with.
