    Coolant Leak

Drove parents to gloucester yesterday, coming down the motorway on the way home, coolant light came on, I come of the motorway, and as I pulled into services, the car started to overheat (red light came on)

I filled up coolant tank with water to do me till I got home, which is about 20 miles of A Roads. The temperature dropped back down to normal almost instantly.

unfortunately, I got literally half a mile down the road, and the coolant light came on again. I pulled into the Asda store at the side of the road immediately, and found the water had all gone. Took a good 4 litres to get the level float to come up, but as fast as I put the water in, it came out again.

I stayed in the Asda car park and got a recovery truck to collect me, as the last thing I wanted was to risk overheating the car - causing bigger problems than I already have.

Im going to jack the car up shortly and put a hose in the filling hole and turn it on low, look for the leak.

Will flush the coolant system while I am there. Not sure if its going to be the Rad, expansion tank, thermostat housing, pipe work or water pump. Anyone know of anything it could be losing water that fast?

70 quid for a new radiator matrix, it will either be in most common order: the rad bowed at the bottom and leaking in the corners(look thru the very bottom valance grill see if its bowed? or down in engine bay between rad and engine see if the undertray is wet in the middle) or a cracked expansion bottle or less likely an iffy water pump bearing and seal...

its all cheap and easy DIY tho..

have a look at my guides on here for a rad and expansion bottle how to...

did the right thing trailering it home aswell overheating these engines can be fatally expensive...

Ok, it is the Expansion tank, popped of the airbox, and noticed it jetting out the back of the expansion tank, like a super soaker water gun!

About to order a new tank. will print of the guide to do the job.

Also while I am here, totally different subject, but does 250 sound fair to get Vanos rebuilt? I dont know if its failing or failed, but I do know that everyone says they have all failed after certain mileage. I have receipts for Disa valve replacements from BMW, whatever that is. But that was last year, and 27,000 miles ago.... (yes 27,000 in a year :s)
