My First 325 TI SE - Has some minor issues

    Hi Guys

I bought a 2002 325ti SE yesterday and am extremely happy with it, there are some little niggles though and hope you guys can help.....

    1) This morning the coolant light came on, ive done a bit of quick research and there seems to be a bit of a difference of opinion regarding whether you should use BMW branded coolant, anyone had a bad experience not using it? Engine temp hasn't risen at all.

    2) The Central locking doesn't open the passenger door, it will lock it but wont pop the lock when you unlock it, so i have to open the passenger door from the inside. (knew this when i bought it)

    3) Rear wiper isn't working, the fuses have been checked but it seems like the motor is dead, any thoughts about getting this fixed? (thought i'd checked this but obviusly not)

Other then these I'm super pleased, it drives like a dream, handling is fantastic very happy, just want to iron out these faults

    Cheers

Sorry Just realized this should be in the E46 thread

Low water level on my compact was a knackered radiator - replacing that solved the problem of water loss, I have also replaced the thermostat and waterpump recently to be sure of no further issues as the thermostat is a known weak point and the waterpump impellers can become detached over time as they are plastic and pressed into the shaft, I used genuine antifreeze (it's nitrate free and helps prevent damage to the plastics) - not heard of any issues with people using something else (only not using ANY) but it's cheap enough from the stealers for the real stuff TBH. The M54 engine can be difficult to bleed though, it took me ages... (This is a good general guide http://www.bmwforums.info/3-series-g...ng-system.html)

The door actuator is probably the culprit for the central locking and the rear wiper is the most common failure on a Compact...

You can repair the rear wiper if you are handy with some tools, it's easy really - just use the guts from a rear wiper on a Mk1 Ford Focus..... (Honestly) Or ask or forum vendor about a replacement, but it ain't cheap....
I used this guide when I repaired mine in June and it still works like a good 'un (and for less than 20!)2003 e46 318ti compact rear wiper problem - Page 2

    Cheers Kevin

I'll check out the wiper repair

I've no sign of any leakage and the temperature of the engine is constant so I'm more then hopeful its just low. The manual does suggest it will need topping up from time to time. I'll think I'll swing by the dealer tomorrow & stick to their fluid then just to be on the safe side.

    Cheers Kevin

It comes in 1.5 litre bottles and you can dilute it down to make at least double that....

The wiper motor is a doddle to repair, you can remove it in less than 15mins and fix it on the kitchen table in under an hour if you have the Focus one to swap the parts....
