Hello, my name is David and I am trying to figure out a way to get Foglights working with my 1993 318IS.
Now After much reading and the mess the wires are, I think I want to rewire them so they function completely independent from the High/Low/Headlights Beams Switch. You know so that when I push the Foglight switch and the foglights come on regardless if I have the headlights turned on or not.
originally I started a thread at m42 forums here, it has some good info but I dont think I will receive a lot of help there..
Trying to Install E36 Fog lights..Need Power Source.. - M42club.com - Home of the BMW E30/E36 318i/iS
I've also gone through this thread on this very forum here
I plan on going with these schematics
To cut things short I understand to rewire the foglights to work independently I will need a Relay, a few fuses, butt connectors / wire crimp spade connectors, some wiring and of course the existing switch. The Relay's Terminal 30 will be connected to a 12V Solid Red wire from the battery or something thats always hot, The Terminal 87 Will be connected to The Fog lights themselves. I guess the existing wires that are going to the switch I will just cut off and heat shrink them? Then I will need a regular low amp 12V accessory key switched power line to tap into from the dash and connect to the foglight switch. So when I press the foglight switch it will send the 12V power to the relay and close the circuit between 30 and 87 and therefore making the foglights to power up.
Can you recommend any 12V acc powered wire I may tap into for this? I was thinking the White / Violet(Purpleish) wire? but its pretty thin and I am currently planing to use it to hardwire my GPS, gauges and V1, So I dont want to put any extra load on it if I can use something else? This will just be used for turning the relay on or off. No serious amps /load needs to come off it as when the relay is closed the fogs will be powered from a direct Red wire / Battery.
So Does all that make any sense?
Can you guys recommend any other switched power source under the dash that I should usee instead of the White/Violet wire? Please leave me some input, If I can do it then I will document it and post here and it will be very helpful to other e36 owners who want to install foglights without paying hundreds.
