Hello again everyone!
I recently posted a thread moaning about my thermostat. With the right tools it was a doddle and after messing around bleeding the system i got hot air and life was good! The car didn't have a thermostat in there when i removed the housing which has been a head f*** though!
I left it running for another 5 mins or so and saw the bottom hose directly underneath the expansion tank drop a load of coolant. I topped up and made sure i had bled the system properly and it was fine for a few days, no dropped fluid etc.
Then the warning came on the OBC and i had topped up again but couldn't mind a leak or any obvious damp especially around the thermostat which i changed.
I had to drive 200 miles yesterday so i filled the expansion tank and when the car cooled after i got home it had used the full expansion tanks worth.
Again no obvious leaks, stayed perfect temp all journey, 42mpg on the motorway, running well, pulling well.
I have gone to top up this morning and there is a bit of a oily ming smell at start up until it heated, didn't appear to drop coolant while i had it hot, but it was wet anyway so was difficult to notice!
I've read loads of threads and with my own knowledge i have the following list of possibilities:
1) The bottom hose i caught in the act the first time and it was just the once i managed to catch it!
2) Water pump
3) leak in the head, a mate of mine said sometimes cars have the stat removed if there is a lot of pressure in the head and this relieves the pressure, the added pressure is linked to a leak of coolant, there is no oil in the coolant and the cap was a bit mayo'd but i had done so many tiny journeys it was no surprise at this time of year
4) Cracked thermo housing though it seems fine at heat when Iíve looked
6) Just read a thread about the auto transmission fan directly underneath the expansion tank?
I know it's quite broad and it could be any of or all those things but it's running nice and not overheating or using silly fuel.
Cheers everyone in advance!
