Cars been sat in the garage for the past week due to the snow, and before that was only really used for short trips.. took it out this evening for a short run to shops and no problems on the way there - starter spun as normal and car started on the button, on the way back same thing, starter spun fine and the engine started on the button. But, halfway back the battery light illuminated on the dash.
Battery across terminals with engine off shows 11.8v <--- seems a bit low but engine had just been turned off, boot lights etc still on.
Battery across terminals with engine running shows 12v <--- not 14v so i guess the alternator is duff?
I was sort of hoping the battery (which is less than 4 years old) was flat and causing the alt charge light to show, but looking at the above its likely the alternator has decided to give up the ghost?
Has anyone rebuilt their e46 alternator themselves? I've done a few in the past but depends on whats likely to be wrong on this one, bushes is all i replaced previously.
Or failing that, where best to get a recon? Any recommendations? Not entirely sure about the quality of recons hence considering doing it myself (bearings etc likely to be fine, alt was not whining or anything).
