Re: PLEASE HELP - loss of power & mpg

Once warmed up the temp should be between 88-92 degrees C.
Not sure about decent indys in Preston maybe @Nathb will know as he's up that way?
No probs re code reading, simple & easy, it's fixing the errors that's the headache.
Do you feel like the turbo isn't boosting correctly or as it did?
Sometimes the variable vanes can coke up and restrict movement
    & so performance?
But ultimately its very hard to guess without diagnostic pointers.

Could be his MAP sensor is blocked up Simon given the crap that was in the EGR, that would restrict turbo operation and low temperature from duff thermostates killing mpg.

Aye you're right Ben, I've also seen the turbo actuator arm come loose causing boost issues? imo its imperative codes are read asap to point the OP/us in the right direction?

PLEASE HELP - loss of power & mpg

@simonsays I have no issues with mine ATM last brim to brim was 52mpg however thought I would check the temp on way home from fishing today 24miles

Seems a bit low went to 86 when I overtook a slow car but had the cruise on most of the way back and when I got home and parked up on the drive it went down to 83

is this just because its cold or has the stat gone? I changed both stats about 18 months ago with genuine BMW stats so wouldn't be best pleased if one has gone already
I was going to PM you but though it might help out in this thread

Re: PLEASE HELP - loss of power & mpg

I would suggest its the outside temp @jim 320d , as you've no other issues coupled with excellent mpg.
Keep your eye on it mate as you say the thermos still have 6mth left on warranty

Back on topic @320CDCAB have you managed to check the temperature via the hidden menu?

Simon checked the OBD temp from a 30 miles run on the motorway was showing at 68deg c??? The temp needle is not at 12oclock more like 11oclock?
I checked when i got home and followed the guide on the OBC.

Well that shows your thermostat isn't working as it should which is causing at least some of your poor MPG

Well that would point to duff stats for sure EGR stat is easy to check and change you just remove it and see if you can blow through it if you can its no good main stat is a little harder and I had mine done at my local Indy but that would be affecting you mpg.

    BMW EGR change

As for the poor boost and no smoke could be your map sensor needs cleaning
Its pretty easy to do remove the pollen filter housing - 4x T25? torx screws and its on the end of the inlet manifold nearest the windscreen, unplug it and remove the 10mm bolt that holds it on. you want to use electrical contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol

Could also need your vac pipes changing and tbh it sounds like the engine could do with a few remedial 320d jobs doing to it to get it back to its best 'inlet mani clean for one'

As said when you get the codes read we will help point you in the right direction and don't worry it will be back to its best

Thanks guys for the help, will follow this up over the next few days my house boilers packed up today so need to sort that out or else no hot water!
    appreciate your help.
Approximately how long should the car take to warm upto the appropriate ~90oC temp?
one thing i was thinking about was that when i replaced the flow meter I removed the pipe connecting to i think the turbo inlet, when i fitted this pipe back into the turbo inlet i noticed there wasnt any gasket or Oring seal for the connection I just connected the pipe striaght onto the turbo inlet. I was wondering whether there should be oring or gasket to give a good tight seal on the connection?

Also is there any way of checking the main thermostat before i go out and buy one, thanks for the vid Ill check the EGR thermostat. Will the EGR thermostat have such a big affect on the temp?
Also any ideas where to get these parts that are good quality dont want to pay dealer prices?!
    Thanks all appreciate it!

I also remember that last time it went for a service the mechanic said it had a fault code on the glow plugs so i got them replaced with new ones (when mechanic took them out they seemed to look ok), it is since this time that this fault code occurred that the problems with power/mpg has started. Whats interesting is that I have read few people who have very similar symptoms to mine ie loss of power/mpg seem to report a fault code with glow plugs? Even though i replaced my glow plugs it has not made a difference in fact the symptoms have gradually got worse.
