Just got back from a trip to France, the old 323i (154k miles) didn't miss a beat, fully loaded boot and roof box, 2 adults and two kids.
Did 370 miles to the light on which is the most i've ever got from a tank in this car, which was around 31MPG confirmed by brim method which I didn't think was too bad until the other half of the travelling party filled their Yaris up and it had returned 43mpg, with far more weight: 3 (large) adults, one child, full boot and larger roofbox, crammed. Impressive for a 1.3 I thought.
Emissions are spot on, tyre pressures checked frequently, no crap in boot, and no codes either, yet it only ever gives about 280-300 to a tank around town and never normally more than 330-350 to tank on a combined. This seems to be less than other owners of similar engines claim, as I see 380 cited as being easily achievable around town.
I've done all the obvious stuff and in fairness I know my onions. Stat, airfilter, MAF all working clean and/or new. Plugs are proper ones, changed 30k ago. Emissions spot on anyway. LTFT/STFT were both well inside spec last time i checked, be interesting to see post trip will check later.
Wondering if a temp sensor is duff but not flagging a code - is that possible? I reset the MPG computer and in traffic it was showing 9mpg which seemed rather low, it wasnt stone cold either.
OTOH I don't hang about - so it may be normal for my driving style The Yaris was doing no more than 60mph all the way, zzzzz.
