being blunt and honest your in pretty bad trouble now and need some specialist knowledge and equipment for the N42 engine and it will prolly be expensive aswell..

my only advice really if ya not very N42 engine savvy is to get it to a reputable indy BMW specialist but its prolly gonna be grisly if its jumped and smashed the tensioner aswell....

ya could have a butchers at the TIS but its not pretty reading..

If the cylinder leakage test proves good then you should be fine, most times the valves are ok.

You will need the tools for timing it up or it will never run properly I'm afraid when it is back together.

As for places renting the tools, I've not heard of any.

Hi guys what do you think was the cause of the timing chain jumping and causing the guide rails to break

shit and weak design first and foremost can be exacerbated tho by a sticking vanos which can invoke slack in one side of the chain makin it jump the cam gear or a faulty chain tensioner...

THE N46 engine the sucessor to the N42 engine the poor design was addressed with a stronger guides etc..

i think if you order replacements you get the upgraded parts...

least ya can get em 15% cheaper via our BFI BMW forum vendor...
