I'm new to this forum, having joined today to look for help to prepare for a pretty big repair bill.
Last week the timing chain in my compact 2002 E46 316ti broke, causing all sorts of fun. I've been advised that my only options are scrapping or an engine replacement.
I like the car so much that I'm choosing to replace the engine.
I have contacted my mechanic, started an internet sweep for used N42E18 engines, and preparing myself to eating beans on toast for the rest of the year!
Being a complete car novice, I would really appreciate any pointers from your good selves.
A few specific questions:
- My mechanic is suggesting that while the engine is being replaced I do a clutch change as well, which seems to me like a good idea. Is there anything else that might also be usefully done while the engine is being replaced?
- In my internet search, I noticed that N42E20 is a drop-in replacement for N42E18. Has anyone done this, and if so, is there anything that I should look out for (e.g. DVLA, insurance, etc)?
- What about replacing the engine with the newer N46E18 engine? Is this a completely crazy idea?
Many thanks for reading through this post! Any help would really be appreciated. Cheers!
