Good morning all I'm a new member looking for a bit of expert help with a 318Ci. So please be gentle "It's my first time" lol
My sister has recently given me her 53 plate 318Ci. It's a lovely little car in silver with only 62000miles on the clock. The only real problem is the engine tapping which I'm afraid is constant! Very loud on both start up and also when warm.
I've heard lots of different stories about this particular fault, mostly the timing chain tensioner "which I replaced" with it being such a cheap part with unfortunately no results!
My sister had an uncanny knack of not getting the car serviced and, more importantly NOT changing the oil
Realising there was hardly any oil in it I did a flush and then an oil and filter change hoping the engine would respond well to that but, the tapping has persisted!
I removed the rocker cover to discover loads, and I mean "LOADS" of carbon flakes and oily deposits in the top which I removed and cleaned. I put another flush through and changed the oil and filter again. Still the tapping remained.
An old mate of mine who use to mess around with 740's and 850's called the other day and said categorically that it's a "Stuck / faulty" lifter...
My question are please: -
1, With such bad servicing can the lifters / tappets go faulty @ 62000 miles?
2, Is there anyone who has had this problem? And what was your solution please?
3, Is there anyone in my area "Leeds / Yorkshire who could diagnose and repair this car?
It is such a nice little car I do feel it's worth having repaired so, any help on this would be gratefully received
