2005 A few problems - Gearbox, Diff, Vibrations and fuel heater

    Hi all!!

It's been a while.... cars been running fine, with no major issues and decent mpg.

I am now looking at rectifying a few other issues on this dog of a car, to finally clear all the codes on INPA - Note: I posted this on 2 other forums with little success, Googling hasn't worked for much of it either :(

    1) I never got rid of the fuel heater fault (the part that connects to the fuel filter), upon clearing the code it appears almost immediately - so the underside will come off this weekend to check connections.

    2) Differential oil - is this a nice easy driveway change? what grade do you use? I gather these aren't LSD equipped?

    3) Gearbox oil - can anyone recommend a garage near Sheffield/South Yorkshire? The changes are getting a little long now, I still have the rev twitch, so I'm hoping this will sort the issues (must be due given the cars on 144k!)

    4) Exhaust flap - after searching on Google, a member of another forum suggested that if this isn't working, then theres likely to be a hose issue under the bonnet, I've replaced all my vac hoses with silicone, so need a bit of help to understand where the other failure could be?

    5) and lastly, I'm now getting a fault and noticeable judder on cold when the car is rolling, in first mostly. The code says something along the lines of 'Engine vibration controller fault' - after googling I dont think there is such a thing? (someone on another forum mentioned the vac pipes on the engine mounts)

    Any help much appreciated gents

    Hi Tim,

Sorry I can't help with any of your issues other than show you a recommendation from another forum member 'snow8oard', who has the 335d.
He took his car from Leeds to BM Wizard in Oswestry, quite a trek but they're such a specialised engine you can't just leave them with any garage.

Just Google "snow8oard BM Wizard", it might be worth giving BM Wizard a ring as I know he's done work on quite a few members cars now?

hi bud, long time no see.
2, diff oil should be nice change on the drive, its only about 1 L of oil and no, they are no LSD :(
4, if im correct exhaust flap is controlled by suspension pump actually, not by vacuum from the engine.

i take your box is auto, how often your car shifts to 1st gear? should do that only in sports or manual mode.

Simon, cheers mate, I might end up doing that eventually.... just trying to keep the bills down ATM, this car was supposed to be me being sensible - the costs of putting it right however have spiralled!

Mjom! alright fella! yeah I've hardly used the forum in recent months.... too busy felanddering!

The gearbox hardly goes to 1st tbh, unless i actually move it there myself - i use semi auto quite often to get the power out of it. Symptoms are twitching rev needle at certain RPM, power doesnt come immediately in all gears and all RPM's (thats likely to be mapping I'd have thought) and the gear shifts are getting slightly less slick than they were (they were never amazing).

What grade oil do you use for the diff?

ALso, the exhaust flap - I noticed that it was part of the Air suspension programming on INPA.... but when you check the electric valve situated in the boot above the rear box (connects to the exhaust with a piece of tube), the airline (from the electric v) appears to disappear towards the front (the comp is obviously at the other side of the boot) - defo a weird one that needs closer inspection. Also when i changed the suspension comp, there was no additional pipe going into the comp or the valve - based on this it looks unrelated. In short, they seem completely unrelated judging by the piping.

cheers Corkie - I use them for some of my coding not long back, i do rate them. My problem is keeping costs down and they want 490 to do the gearbox alone! I know theres the argument about it being done right but comon

Hopefully this gbox change will make the difference, otherwise I'm looking at new Mechatronics, Solonoids, torque converter, or worse...a new box :(

yup thats Mrgearbox.... they quoted me 220, but they aren't using genuine oil, just what they use with an additive.

My parents have also had a rebuild done there only a few weeks ago, broke after a week as the box wasn't put back together properly. The only other one is Sheff i know about is MT tranmissions, they didn't want to know (job prob too small) - I actually had a clutch done there with a previous car, and they made up costs associated despite the agreed price befrehand.

Hard work finding a decent transmission specialist that does a decent job for decent money :(
