Central locking and interior lights problem

    Hi folks,
Hope someone can help with this

On the e28 the central locking is dead and the interior lights dont work

Other day i changed the CL control unit and it made no difference so thats 3 different ones that dont work so im thinking maybe thats not the problem

The old guy that had the motor from 1990 till it went off the road in 2005 kept a journal type thing about the maintenance and a bit of it relates to the electrics

Heres what it says " Electrical fault developed. RH side and tail light fuse blows when switched on " their ok now. then it says " Also fuse 5 permanent earth on feed side. All faulty circuits by passed except for central locking ( cant find control box ) and inside lights which will be done later "

Im not too hot with the electrics but does anyone know what he means by the fuse 5 permanent earth on feed side?

The central locking, interior lights and clock are connected to that fuse 5. The clock works fine and i think thats because the key has to be at 1 for it to work and the CL and INT LIGHTS need to work with no key so thats what hes on about with the permanent feed

Am i on the right track here guys with this?

Hope ive explained what i mean okay like

    boot wiring harness ok?

Fuse 5 is all the constant power low amp stuff. It is the largest circuit in the car. I would look for obvious easy stuff. Shorted glove box or trunk light. Power mirror, heater. radio memory. What have you been messing with lately?

    http://shark.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BMW/e28/e28_86.pdf

    http://shark.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BM...e28_86.pdf-try a 10amp fuse instead

unplug obc horn if you have one

check glovebox light it may be shorting out
    electric mirror?

driver's side front door wires in the door jab shorting out. I had to unplug my "mirror controller"?? and it stop blowing the fuse. The rubber boot around the wire harness for the door had partially corroded away and cause the insulation for the wiring to wear away exposing the copper to the door jab(jam

quote-I had an problem with this fuse also. Took me a couple of days to figure it out. Fuse would just blow out at random. Ended up pulling the power mirror controller in drivers side door. Years of opening/closing door and deterioration tore up the rubber protector for the wire harness between body and door which caused the harness to get pinched and cause a short. Never replaced the door harness and just left the power mirror controller disconnected

The courtesey light delay relay can be found under the dash on the right hand side, where the dash loom and cabin looms connect, they are usually a black rectangular 6 pin relay, other relays at this connection are square and usually blue or yellow, or if an older model have metal casings. -you turned this off by mistake buddy?

that fuse 5 is lots of stuff mate so its gonna be a hard look and check everything but hope this helps at some point but basically its a permanent live its been wired too, does the radio work?
