I wanna share something I have been working on today.
The LCD on the gauges of my mum's E60 has started to act up and as I had a spare cluster in the house after I modded my cluster in my E60 I thought I would share my results and hopefully will be helpful to someone.
Now obviously the first sign is screw heads showing wear but the doesnt mean the car is hiding anything(ie my car when I removed the dash the clocks had to be removed)
The clocks on the E60 hold a lot of information specific to that car such as mileage, VIN Number service details etc.
This does mean though the honest person takes the hit as in a perfect world the clocks begin to play up you can go to the scrap yard find a new cluster and install it and the computer writes its info onto the clocks and all is well. But nope BMW don't play that way and after some research all the sources I have visited claim a brand new cluster is needed.
No the clocks retain the information of the previous vehicle. And from experience when I was in the market for an E60 one vehicle I viewed had this tell tale sign which I will show now.
This is the donor clocks. Excuse them being a bit bare as I stripped them when I done the cluster mod but they still work
They are from an early 04 525d Manual.
I tried this out on my own car as the other E60 was away and I got bored
First step was to remove my kick ass M5 look alike cluster
Then install the donor cluster.
So it all clicks in and everything is ready to go.
Turn the ignition on the first light I was met with was the service light as the service values in my car had vanished. I am guessing due to the mismatch in miles in the ECU and what the clocks provided.
The next thing is a dot appears beside the miles to show that the miles on the clocks do not match the miles on the car and this cannot be removed until the miles match.
Also my car is an auto and so is my mum's car and as this clocks came off a manual E60 it will not display P R N D M1 M2 M3 M4 M5 M6 on the speedo depending on what you have selected.
This is what the service screen looks like
And then when I plugged my cluster back in
I didnt want to try to do service resets etc as my car has just been serviced and I didnt want to screw anything up
So if you notice this on an E60 ask questions as why its like that
