Hello there people,
Right, something that's been on my mind is the pre facelift E39 rear lamps ('96-'00). I would like to upgrade the look of them. Now, I've read somewhere that the facelift rear lamps won't directly fit in the pre-facelift car. Some modification (wiring + chassis bashing) and coding will be required, and I do not want to do any of those as I am worried I'll make a mistake and I do not have the equipment to code it. There is a Hella retrofit kit available but that would cost like at least £300 (incl delivering), and that would still require some chassis modification.
So I have scoured eBay for some rear e39 lamps. I found some awful looking ones, but then I came across this one (£50 incl delivering) >>> BMW 5 Series E39 - Tail Light Unit - 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 - Pair | eBay These look a lot like the facelift rear lamps but the main difference being that it has 3 red "bars" instead of 4 for the tail light section, and on the OEM one, there is a reflector that runs along the bottom which makes the reverse section slightly smaller. Apparently these are a direct fitment so no modification required and because it uses the same tail light bulbs, there are no ballast to store/required. My only worry with these is that I cannot see any reflectors which could be illegal and dangerous. I've found pictures of e39 with these lamps fitted (shown below);

They don't look too bad. Slightly better than pre-facelift. Does any one know of any alternatives? What are your opinions?
