Hey guys, ( I was suppose to post this last night but fell asleep while writing it ). Apologies for the tread being long-ish. I didn't know I was going to write that much
but to make it simpler, I have 'bolded' the questions
So I've booked the MOT for Monday. I had 3 problems that I wanted to sort by Friday/today with the E39 as i know at least these 3 things will fail the MOT.
First was the screen washer pump. My jets would loose pressure until water started dripping out like a teenager watching porn. No leaks and it turn out it was the pump. It took approximately 1 hour from start to finish to replace it. It's ridiculous what has to be done just to get accessed to the washer tank. Remove wheel, then undo about 15 rusty bolt to remove the wheel arch liner. It may not seem a lot of work, but out in the cold and compared to the E36 (or any car with the tank in the engine bay) it's plain stupid
Next was to sort out the airbag light (stored fault = driver's airbag, Ignition circuit zk0). It could be either the ignition switch (common prob) or the actual wires from the steering wheel to the steering column. I bought a gen but used BMW ignition switch, but before I replaced it, I cleared the codes yesterday. This solved the problem.....for a few hours. The fault returned. So this afternoon I decided to replace the ignition switch. Blimey, this is another stupid thing. Do the Germans have tiny hands or something, or do they enjoy making things complicated Anyways about 1 hour later, I finished installing, and in time too as it was getting dark. I reconnected the battery and the light was still illuminated. I don't know if the car was trying to tell me I'm unsuccessful, so I had to clear the error code (I never had to do this when I installed the passenger seat bypass plug, the light went without clearing codes). So far the light has illuminated. If this doesn't solve it, then I'll need to remove the steering wheel and inspect the wires. Are the 2 torx screws that holds the airbag to the wheel T25 or T30? The wheel is the prefacelift 4 spoke wheel (AKA bus wheel).
Final thing I wanted to sort out was the ABS + TC light (stored fault = front left wheel speed sensor). I am correct in thinking it will fail the MOT if the are illuminated, right? I bought a cheap ABS sensor from 'e of the Bay' and put it bluntly, I could have had the same result as walking up to my toilet and flashing £15 down it....oh no wait, it did have the same result. It didn't even work from the start. I placed it in the affected side = same fault showing. Decided to place it on the other side, then both front wheels came up faulty. At this point I put the originals back, and the eBy one in the boot. Tip to myself: Now, what I should have done here was to swap the working front sensor (right) with the left one to see if the fault would move. But lack of sunlight, rain, wind, and things to do prevented that. Later that night, i drove to a quiet road and plugged INPA into the car to see if any signals were being made. Sure enough the two rear and front right had signals going though (showed 8mph while i was crawling the car), however the front left wasn't moving (showed 2mph which is the min these sensors pick up). Drove to BMW in Worthing today to pick up a sensor for a jaw dropping £108 (I know Harry BMW offered +-£89, but I needed one ASAP), but I still have the same problem . Could this be the dreaded ABS module? How much is it for a rebuild? Anyone done this before? (obviously I'm going to swap the sensors around to see if it's the new sensor.)
Thanks in advance
