as some of you may know I have had faults with my active steering on my 5 series E60.
I have tried to stay clear of the dealers as I knew they were expensive, so tried, using the DIS OBDII diagnostic tools first, that failed I went to a few local independents but still without success.
So today I went to the dealers and explained that my active steering light comes up after about 5 miles of driving or 10 mins standing still with engine running.
I explained what I had done and was told that they could do a basic diagnostic for £65.
Ok lets go for it I said.
I dropped the car off, and at the end of the evening I got a phone call saying that it had been sorted the diagnostics had found faults and they had re-initialized the system and that another issue about faulty adaptive lights was also fixed.
Yeah !!! I thought.
Got to the dealer , and the £65 with VAT etc. went up to £100. OK I thought at least I have it sorted.
First thing I did was turn the lights on. And saw that the green LED by the light control was blinking, ( Hand book says that indicates a fault) How did they say it was fixed, anyway ? , however I was not so worried about the lights as they don't flash warnings.
Drove the car little over 4 miles and the active fault comes on again. I called the dealer telling him that the fault was not fixed. He said bring it back and they would do more investigation. How much ? I said.
"we will start at £150 , then if it needs more we will tell you and continue that way."
I said , with BMW's £1000's pounds diagnostic equipment what would be the longest amount of work before they could pin point the problem. He could not say. I suggested "could it be a week?" . "Yes" was the answer.
So there I have it . I could keep paying as I have this money tree in the garden and what's a few thousand here or there ( after all Am a BMW owner! )
and then find out that a falange ( Those who watch friends will know what this is ) sensor costing £1000s may be required to fix the problem.
I have decided I have to wake up and realise that I live in the real world and do the best with the Lot I have,
So I would like to know how to switch of the option for active steering ?
Stealers ( sorry dealers) said this cannot be done. But these are the same guys who were going to charge me ~£100 to change a parking light.
Is there any one in the SE of England who could help ? , am willing to come to you and offer some bear tokens ?
