2 years ago the remote function of both my keys failed and since then I have been operating the door locks on "manual" (which may be less secure??). I was told that to replace one key courtesy of BMW would set me back well in excess of £100 (£130 from memory) which for the privilege was OTT. Today I took both keys to the local garage that has a key testing gizmo which confirmed that from one key there was no signal, from the other only an intermittent one. They could not open the key to examine the battery - but reckoned that for the same kind of £££ I could get a locksmith to do so. So I don't know whether it is battery failure or system failure within the key (or with the sensor in the car. At one point I was able to get the doors to lock remotely but then they would not unlock, so I gave up).
Am I right in thinking that the only recourse is to cough up £130 + (x 2 keys) to BMW, or stick with using manual locking? And not leave anything valuable on show inside.
