BMW 316i March 2001 jump start went wrong. have i killed it.

    Hi I appreciate all advice,
I jump started using my Volvo V70 last weekend, after putting my girlfriends 316i to SORN in January this year. Battery flat but the car was a tribute to BMW, running fantastically for 17 years, almost all trouble free. The car is in a garage front end in, so i charged straight into the battery, rather than as advised in manual, using the bonnet connections.

Cars were not touching. Volvo was turned off, BMW was off.
I hooked it up black volvo to black BMW battery terminal, then red jump lead from (-) Volvo, to a unpainted part in the BMW boot as advised. The problem was there isnt really an unpainted metal part to act as ground in the boot. I wasnt going to attach it to the metal clip on top of the battery and was unsure if it was acceptable to attach to red (-) BMW clip on battery. I attached the red jump lead to the metal clip on the inside of the BMW boot and it lit up the car dashboard and boot lights immediately before i even turned over the donor car engine.
    Q What actually happened here?
I continued with contact point and turned over the Volvo for 5-10 minutes on 2000rpm. The BMW did not start. NB the ligts did not come on either when testing the contact point as before.
Now i am with BMW that doesnt charge at all. Q. What are my next steps?
    Best

Seems confusing to me what you've actually done. Never go off of wiring colours as they are not always the same, even on cars by the same manufacturer.
The boot lights would come on as you have the boot open, as for the dash, were the keys in the ignition? Was it set to acc or ignition on? If so, then the charge from the Volvo would make it all light up.

As an example of a toasted battery, my 318 took about 25 minutes to get going from flat from the land rover. The car ran fine after for an hour or so, the next day, no lights, nothing... Worse than before.

I'd be inclined to go and get a decent fresh battery for it. At least then you can eliminate the duff one from the equation. Bad batteries will cause all sorts of strange problems.

    Hi rudeuk2,
Ok I reckon thats a good idea to change battery. I had a local garage come out to boost it. It worked just fine with an hour ticking over. Turned off and restarted it and like you, just lights, so a new battery is next. Then i think its time to sell it. Been a lovely car, but now surplus to need.
Many thanks for your advice. it helped eliminate a problem and move me to letting it go.
