    1997 E39 528i - Climate Control Unit

    Hi Guys

My 1997 528i E39 needs a new Climate Control Unit.
Her indoors gets strong blasts of cold air in strange places
which means I get even stronger blasts of hot air in my left ear........
You can imagine what the Main Dealer wants for a new one
but I have found one on E bay which looks pretty pukka
    but its from a lovely looking 1999 540i -
the unit is photographed "in-situ" with perfet pixels, which I imagine is a good indication of it's condition (?).
the car looks perfect but it's had an auto box failure : (
    .
My problem is I'm not sure if it will be compatible with my 1997 528i
I've had mine out and looked at its Serial Numbers, which are as follows :-
    BMW 64 11 8 375 453 .0
    HW 02 K8 SW 07(C) 03(C)
    Pre h 90025 - 041/0000
    SER NR 00350279 KW 32/97
    .
The Serial Numbers from the 540i are as follows :-
    BMW 64 11 6901 628.9
    HW 03 K9 SW 14(P) 05(C)
    Pre-h 90025 - 086 / 0000
    SER NR 00737588 KW 16/1999
    .
Can anyone advise me if the two are interchangeable ?
    Many Thanks

I'm no E39 expert but i took both part numbers of to compare on real OEM
    Your own CC works for: 520, 523, 525, 528, 535, 540, M5 (M52, M62, S62 engines also)
Whereas the other one also works for: Same models as above ^ (+plus 530d)
Seems like both part numbers should work on the car since i can't find any difference. They seem identical units (maybe the later part # means it was made in '99 & yours in '97)

Yours: RealOEM.com * BMW E39 528i Automatic air conditioning control
Other one: RealOEM.com * BMW E39 528i Automatic air conditioning control

That's all i know. I hope others can add more light on this.

    @ Wanda , Watty & Niall
    .
    Thank you for your feedback
    .
I had an interesting phone call today with my Main Dealer who was hell bent on selling me a new unit for 453 + VAT ( bless him )
as opposed to the Ebay one which looks perfect and is going for 45 ( NO VAT & NO Delivery) . Tough decision .
    .
He also seemed a bit confused by the fact that the part numbers I quoted both had 12 digits instead of 11 digits which " all BMW part numbers have ....."
( I quoted my part no. from the extracted unit in my hand (12 digits) and from the Ebay photo (also 12 digits) .
    .
The only bit that stopped me and made me think was when he said that they are programmed differently and hence NOT interchangeable.
But, this is coming from a guy who was telling me that my Climate Control Unit that I was holding in my hand should only have an 11 digit part number
and not the 12 digits that were clearly printed on it and on the photo of the Ebay item.
And secondly, in my time working at a BMW dealership, I remember well how everybody was under strict orders to sell regardless of whether the item was
    needed or not ....
    .
So, can I put it out there to the vote or for discussion ?
    .
    Many Thanks
    Andy Pugwash .

ps : is Daily Doggy on here ?

I've not done this before personally, but i'm 99% sure it can be re-coded (programmed) to suit your vehicle. I'll have a look at the software for it tomorrow, and see what i can find out.

    453? Are they nuts!!!!!!!?????
Narrrrr, i'd go for the used one. He's correct on part numbers they either have to be 7 or 11 (so the 12th digit was probably a period followed by a number eg. ".9" ".0" etc..)
Was there any physical differences ? (ie. comparing eBay photos & with your own unit) ( i still think they are the same)

Well FAL^ has given a better response than i have
