    OEM Navigation Unit

    Hi all,

I am new here, as you probably saw in the Newbie introduction section. I have bought myself a 2002 E46 Coupe, and it has the factory fitted widescreen navigation unit, with the Navigation DVD reader in the boot, with a 6 disc CD changer.

The standard sound system sounds pretty lame compared to what I am used too. I was hoping to add a subwoofer to increase umph, but I dont want my mirrors and doors rattling, I just want a bit of extra power in my music. I may even just change the standard speakers and run them of a 4 channel Amp to increase the audio performance.

Only thing is, I have no idea can I add an amplifier to the existing system? or will it mean changing the headunit, (which I have already considered, as it doesnt support USB MP3)

Is there a later model OEM navigation unit which will support pre outs for amplifiers as well as MP3 via USB? (which again would be a straight fit?)

I feel rude joining and getting straight to the please help me thing, But I did just buy the car yesterday, and spent all day today in the freezing cold detailing it with my DA.

Ok to add a bit more insight, this image looks jut like my current system:

Would it be possible to rig it up to an amplifier, or should I just rip it out, and pop my Pioneer Double Din in?

I changed speakers and added a sub to my E46 as it was a company car, huge improvement, but no substitute for starting from scratch

I have a sub fitted to mine. I have the same sat nav unit. It is all pre amped so adding an amp you'd need to change the HU for another. But it's possible to add in a sub to the system and I've got a dice Ipod kit in there as well sod having a 6 disc changer!
I want to go out quietly in my sleep like my grandfather, and not screaming and crying like his passengers

How did you link in the sub, is there an RCA out somewhere? Could I run a sub directly of the head unit without a seperate amp, or would it be pointless?

I have a fold out pioneer 7" screen not a double din as previously described. I can find anywhere a fascia to fit a single din in place of the OEM double din :s

I actually got a lad I know to do it, as I've done it in so many cars I can't be assed to do it all myself anymore!
There is some sort of splitter unit I think that they use and it works fine, the bass is pretty good and can be controlled from my standard sat nav headunit. If you goto a local car audio shop they should be able to tell you more. Just don't go to halfords

There should be places offering a single din fascia, they'll usually have a tray underneath too. I had 1 in both my Jaguar and my Skyline.
