I'm pretty low at the front, and have no issues with cats eyes, the x brace saves me a lot on old camber country roads

Unless walking on it no need to be chequer plate. Rember that if rigidly mounted and thick you effectively reduce groung clearance transmit more impact into the car.

Might be cheaper lighter and better to skid the rails and bottom of exhaust

I wouldn't bother. you're gonna make it lower and hit things more, especially if you're going lower. The sump is higher (just) than the front subframe so you'll hit that as opposed to the sump. Just my two pence worth.. Are you sure it's not your exhaust hitting cats eyes? Mine used to hang really low, don't have much problem now I've changed it and it's lower than ever..

Subframe got abused by half a brick recently. And my sump is lower than the sun frame. Don't think I'm going checker plate anymore. Just some straight steel

They only come on verts but a very common upgrade for any e36 I haven't seen another like mine before but I presume its standard.
